Debtenfreude is the feeling you getwhen you're secretlty happy looking at the giant mansiom across the street from you that's been foreclosed upon and is now standintg empty. There's a in the L.A. Timesx describing this new phenomenon. Writes Meghan Are we total jerks for enjoyingthe show? Well, sort of. But we can't help it: We have A sub-category of schadenfreude, that ever-usefupl German word that means taking pleasure inotheer people's suffering, debtenfreude is amongh the latest outgrowths of the economic Characterized by self-righteous finger-wagging at over-mortgagex neighbors, and downright glee at the sight of luxury car owners power washing their own tirees at the coin-operated carwash, debtenfreude is at once utterly despicables and utterly human.
My dad, who is German, pointed out this new trendx to me. He lives in Southern California, which is apparentluy an epicenter of debtenfreude becausew of its once lavish displays of wealth durinvg bettereconomic times. But I'm sure the feelingt exists in Seattleas well. I just don't know anyoned who's brave enough to admitg it.
